WORLD MONUMENTS FUND TO HONOR PETER MARINO AND DR. MARILYN PERRY AT 35TH ANNUAL HADRIAN GALA
New York–September 26, 2024: World Monuments Fund (WMF)—the leading independent organization devoted to safeguarding the world’s most treasured places—will honor Peter Marino and Dr. Marilyn Perry at the 35th annual Hadrian Gala. Taking place for the first time in The New York Public Library’s iconic Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, the event will be held on Monday, October 28, 2024.
WMF is proud to recognize architect Peter Marino, FAIA and Dr. Marilyn Perry, Chair Emerita of World Monuments Fund and President Emerita of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, for their extraordinary efforts to save and restore the city of Venice. As Chairman of Venetian Heritage, Marino leads an organization that not only protects the cultural landmarks of the city, but supports critical academic research of Venice’s art, culture, and singular history. A renowned art historian, Dr. Perry has long worked on WMF’s behalf to guide major restoration projects around the globe including revitalization efforts of many historic structures and buildings of Venice.
“Peter Marino and Marilyn Perry have both made remarkable contributions to heritage preservation,” said Bénédicte de Montlaur, President and CEO of World Monuments Fund. "Peter’s leadership at Venetian Heritage has breathed new life into masterpieces like Ca’ d’Oro, and his commitment to Venice continues to inspire preservation efforts worldwide. Dr. Perry, as Chair of World Monuments Fund’s Board for 17 years, was instrumental in overseeing and funding projects across Venice, Italy, and beyond, while also creating the Watch program to protect endangered sites globally. Their passion and dedication reflect World Monuments Fund’s mission to preserve the world’s most significant cultural treasures for future generations.”
The Venetian-inspired evening will include performances by acclaimed opera singer and Grammy Award-winner Anthony Roth Costanzo and members of the Opera Philadelphia Orchestra, and a dinner menu designed in collaboration with legendary chef Daniel Boulud, along with a live auction led by Christie’s.
In the lead up to the 35th Hadrian Gala, WMF will host the World Monuments Summit on Saturday, October 26 at Rockefeller Center at Studio by Tishman Speyer, the firm’s flexible workplace solution. Comprising several panel discussions, the day-long Summit is available to the public. Speakers at the opening talk, which will focus on preservation efforts in Venice, will include honoree Dr. Marilyn Perry and Anna Somers Cocks (Co-Founder, The Art Newspaper). Author and historian Caroline Weber will moderate the second panel of the day, “Building Climate Resilience at Historic Gardens”, with speakers including Deborah Nevins (President, Deborah Nevins & Associates) and Dr. Meredith Wiggins (Senior Director of Climate Adaption, WMF). The third and final talk of the day will preview the findings of a recent expedition to Peru’s remote Río Abiseo National Park, a natural and cultural UNESCO World Heritage site, with insights from Luis Alfredo Narváez Vargas (General Coordinator, Río Abiseo Project) and Juan Pablo de la Puente (WMF Peru Board Member).
Since 1965, WMF has raised $300 million to support more than 700 diverse cultural heritage sites across 112 countries. Central to these efforts is the World Monuments Watch, established by WMF in 1996 to support 25 heritage sites of extraordinary significance around the globe that face pressing challenges every two years. To date, WMF has contributed more than $110 million toward projects at more than 300 Watch sites. Since the program’s inception, the Watch has been a proven tool for raising awareness about heritage places in need of protection and galvanizing action and support for their preservation.
The 2024 Hadrian Gala is made possible by the generosity of Gregory Annenberg Weingarten, GRoW @ Annenberg and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF). Additional support is provided by Tiffany & Co. The 2024 World Monuments Summit is supported by Studio by Tishman Speyer, with additional support provided by official catering sponsor Jupiter.

Honorees
Peter Marino
Peter Marino, FAIA, is the principal of Peter Marino Architect, a New York–based architecture practice founded in 1978. Peter Marino is recognized for award-winning residential, retail, cultural, hotel, and historic restoration projects worldwide. Well known for integrating art within his architectural designs, Marino has commissioned more than 300 site-specific works of art. He is currently Chairman of Venetian Heritage, having been a board member since 1991. Marino has supported extensive architectural and art renovations and restorations within Venice, including Ca’ d’Oro, on Venice’s Grand Canal, Museo di Palazzo Grimani, and life-size Antonio Rizzo statues for the Ducal Palace. Marino also founded the Peter Marino Art Foundation in Southampton, New York, which exhibits over 200 artworks from his collection. His career honors include the insignia of Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from France’s Ministry of Culture and 22 citations for design excellence from the American Institute of Architects.
“My connection to Venice began in the 1990s through my deep involvement with Venetian Heritage,” said Peter Marino, architect and Chairman of Venetian Heritage. “We’ve taken on the enormous work of restoring sites like Palazzo Grimani and the interior of Ca’ d’Oro, a mission closely with that of World Monuments Fund, which restored the façade of Ca’ d’Oro in 1969. WMF continues to play a vital role in preserving the great achievements of mankind.”
Dr. Marilyn Perry
Dr. Marilyn Perry is the Chair Emerita of WMF and its longest serving Board Member. A historian of European art, she lived in Venice in the 1970s prior to joining the Samuel H. Kress Foundation as President in 1981, retiring in 2007. She joined the Board of WMF in 1984 and served as Chair from 1990 to 2007, serving on all committees. Her current committee assignments are the Nominating and Governance Committee and the International Relations Committee. For WMF’s 50th anniversary in 2015, Dr. Perry wrote Hadrian’s Way: Creating World Monuments Fund (1965-2015) to document the organization's development and its impact on the evolving heritage world. Heritage remains a primary passion in her current life as a painter.
"The great adventures of my life began as a historian of Venetian art, in one of the world's most celebrated cities of art and architecture," said Dr. Marilyn Perry, President Emerita of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation (1984-2007) and Chairman Emerita of World Monuments Fund (1990-2007). "Guiding the early expansion of WMF was a period of great excitement, as the talented staff literally forged a new field -- finding ways to identify, fund, protect, celebrate, and cherish endangered cultural heritage through matching grants, training programs, and the World Monuments Watch program, to the benefit of hundreds of unique sites around the globe. Receiving the Hadrian Award is a tremendous honor after a very privileged lifetime of helping to safeguard our shared cultural heritage."
