Google's World Wonders Project Maps Historic Sites

The World Wonders Project uses Google’s StreetView functionality to allow users to virtually explore a wide range of sites of historical significance worldwide, including Kew Gardens and Stonehenge in the UK and the ancient Kyoto temples in Japan.

As well as StreetView style mapping, the World Wonders project will also include 3D models, pictures and YouTube videos of the sites to give users a variety of ways to explore.

If your budget is too tight to actually stroll along the banks of the Seine or trek through Jerusalem, Google is now offering a virtual alternative -- digital tours of famous sites across the world.

The World Wonders Project uses the same Street View technology that allows people to virtually navigate their neighborhoods through Google Maps, but the cameras are focused on historic and treasured sites such as Florence, Stonehenge and ancient Kyoto instead.

Babylon's Undiscovered Treasures Threatened by New Oil Pipeline

"No one can say right now if the oil pipeline has caused damage," said Lisa Ackerman, executive vice-president of the World Monuments Fund (WMF), a New York-based foundation for preserving architectural heritage, who works on the site with the Iraqi authorities. "But I think it's very likely that it crosses sensitive archaeological zones."

Tunisia Attractions: Bulla Regia, Caves, Skywalker Home

While Tunisians sort out their future after a distraught vendor sparked the Arab protests in December 2010, the country’s past continues to attract the World Monuments Fund.

Since 2009, the WMF, an international nonprofit dedicated to the preservation of historic architecture and sites, has been helping to stabilize and safeguard the ruins of Bulla Regia, a once prosperous colony-city not far from Carthage, the home of Hannibal and the abandoned Queen Dido of Virgil’s poem.

American Express has donated $150,000 to help preserve the ruins of Coventry's old cathedral.

The finance company has promised the money - about £100,000 - after an appeal for more than £2 million was launched last year when a large crack appeared in one of the walls.

The cathedral is on the World Monuments Fund 2012 Watch List, a register of buildings worthy of preservation.

Funds will help restore the ruins and the original stained glass windows.
